Ever had that feeling? That fire in your belly for a big goal? Maybe it's launching that side hustle, running a marathon, or finally learning to play the ukulele. You’re revved up, you make a plan, and you're ready to conquer the world!
And then... life happens.
Suddenly, your clear path morphs into a winding road with a few unexpected detours. A new job demands more time, family needs shift, or maybe you just hit a creative block that feels like a brick wall. This is where a lot of people pump the brakes and think, "Well, that's that. Guess it wasn't meant to be."
But here's the secret sauce from my corner of the coaching world: Those detours? They are NOT failures. They are part of the journey.
Think about it. If you're driving somewhere new, and there's road construction, do you just give up and go home? No! You reroute. You might grumble a little, but you find another way. The destination hasn't changed, just the path to get there.
Sometimes these detours can feel incredibly long – months, even years. It can be easy to feel stuck, like you’re treading water. But as long as you’re still reaching, still making any kind of effort, even if it's just keeping that dream alive in your mind, you're not stuck. You're simply on a longer, more scenic route.
Here's the beautiful truth about goals:
You will reach them. With persistence, adaptation, and that unwavering "why" behind your goal, you will often arrive exactly where you intended. It might take longer, or look different than you imagined, but you'll get there.

Or, your goal will change. And guess what? That's perfectly okay! Sometimes, a detour shows you an even more exciting path, or a new destination entirely. You learn more about yourself, what truly motivates you, and what lights you up. Maybe that marathon isn't your true calling, but training for it revealed a passion for hiking. Or that side hustle morphed into a full-time passion project you never even knew existed!
The key is to keep checking in with yourself. Are you still moving forward, even if it's slowly? Are you still engaged with the idea, even if the action looks different?
So, next time you hit a detour on your journey to awesome, take a deep breath. It's not a dead end. It's just a chance to explore a little, learn a lot, and maybe even discover a better, more authentic destination for you.
Embrace your journey, start today!
